Election 2023: INEC postpones Governorship And State Assembly Elections to March 18

The elections for governor and state assemblies have been postponed to March 18 by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

After a meeting of its executives on Wednesday night, INEC announced that the election could not proceed as planned due to a logistical crisis caused by BVAS configuration and transportation. The election was originally supposed to take place on March 11.

An official with knowledge of the meeting disclosed this on Wednesday night and said that the polls were delayed to give one extra week for preparations. Before March 18, we ought to have everything organized.

As of the time this story was submitted, the meeting was still going on at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

On the basis that it needed to modify the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) in order to conduct the elections this Saturday, the commission persuaded the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to modify the order granting Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP permission to inspect the election materials.
