Since last Saturday, July 23, 2023, there has been a significant backlash on social media from the country’s religious community against popular Nigerian artist Davido for sharing a music video that has been accused of being disrespectful to Islam.
The video drew criticism from several northern elites, like Nuhu Ali and Bashir Ahmad, who accused Davido of endorsing material that violated Islamic principles.
Waspapping, a well-known northern social media influencer, claims that Davido and his songs are no longer permitted to be played in public in Kano and Sokoto.
Videos of some northern Muslims ripping and removing the singer’s flyers, photographs, and posters from public spaces have also surfaced online.
