The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fayoade Adegoke, emphasized that it is not permissible for any police officer to conduct phone searches on Nigerian citizens.
He highlighted the existence of a dedicated cyber section within the Police Force responsible for such investigations. If a police officer has suspicions, the proper procedure involves taking the individual to the station for a thorough phone search.
During his visit to Melody FM, 107.7FM, in Iyana-Ipaja on Wednesday, Commissioner Adegoke commended the radio station for its commitment to providing valuable information to the public.
He reiterated that bail is readily available and encouraged the public to expose any instances of corruption involving police officers.
The Commissioner urged citizens who feel mistreated or encounter corruption by a police officer to report the matter to the officer’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
If the DPO does not address the issue satisfactorily, the public is advised to escalate the complaint to the Area Commander. Commissioner Adegoke assured the public that he is open to direct reports, providing his phone number for Lagosians to use.
He emphasized that no police officer has the right to physically assault citizens, reminding the public that they are the government’s employers whose taxes support law enforcement. Commissioner Adegoke emphasized the importance of treating the public with respect and decency.
Additionally, he reasserted that searching phones is not within the rights of individual police officers and that any suspicions warrant taking the individual to the station where the cyber department can appropriately handle the investigation.
