A woman in Onitsha Anambra tragically loses her life as she is fatally crushed by a 40-foot container

It was discovered that further casualties were avoided because traders who noticed the moving truck quickly fled the area.

An unidentified woman lost her life when a 40ft container fell from a moving trailer in the bustling Eze-Iweka vicinity near the Upper Iweka Bus Stop, along the Onitsha-Owerri Road.

This tragic incident occurred on a Thursday evening while the truck was parked by the roadside for goods to be unloaded, suddenly it started moving. Notably, the driver was not in the vehicle at the time.

As the truck began to move, the 40ft container it was transporting toppled over and fatally crushed a woman who was standing by the roadside.

Fortunately, more casualties were prevented as nearby traders observed the truck’s motion and promptly fled the scene.

By Friday morning, the deceased woman remained trapped beneath the container, and rescue efforts were still underway to lift the container and recover her body.

Margaret Onabe, the acting Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred around 3 pm.

She attributed the cause of the accident to brake failure and reported that the police were working to procure a crane to raise the fallen 40ft container.

She stated, “An unidentified driver of a commercial Mark trailer was involved in a road traffic accident at approximately 3:08 pm on Thursday.

The likely cause of this fatal accident was brake failure. According to eyewitnesses, the truck was stationary, with goods being unloaded when it suddenly rolled off without a driver and struck an individual, resulting in the death of one adult female.

The FRSC rescue team and the Awada police team rushed to the scene, making efforts to obtain a crane to lift the 40ft container and free the trapped victim.

The Awada police division is also conducting an investigation, including locating the truck driver.”

She went on to say that the Sector Commander in the state, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

He strongly cautioned motorists against disregarding traffic regulations and emphasized the importance of maintaining vehicles to minimum safety standards to prevent such accidents.

His message stressed the importance of safe driving to protect one’s own life and the lives of others on the road.
